Cycle 2012 Scott and Jamie of dreamSTATE
will launch a 3 Hour Drone Event at THE
AMBiENT PiNG, where every 20 minutes
they "pass the drone baton" to performers from the original Drone
Cycle 2000 and then

eclectic sonic adventurers.
dreamSTATE
begin at 8:00pm followed by their special guest droners:
Steven Sauvé (Geek Weekend) on electronics, Wally Jericho on trumpet,
cheryl o (quasiMODAL) on cello, Stuart Clark on electronics,
James Bailey (NOiNO/Odradek) on anythingatall, and scant intone on electronics.

Come early, come late, wander in and out... The Drone will be there for you.
If
you're not in Toronto, you can peer into the PiNG through the LiveStream

the show.

portraying all of dreamSTATE's special guests as hand-embroidered impressions
on Irish linen printed with General Chaos Visuals. The entire series will
be displayed
at Supermarket, Toronto during the Drone Cycle Coda concert and through the

THE DRONE CYCLE 2012 - January through December 2012
It
seems a million years since dreamSTATE began The Drone Cycle 2000,
though it has only been a dozen. In each month of 2000, dreamSTATE
performed a concert of improvisations based on a note of the chromatic scale:
January in C, February in C#... Each month dS was joined by special
guests to
add their special flavours to the stew. It was a landmark year for dreamSTATE
who had the great privilege of creating with amazing musicians each month
Beginning
January 10th, 2012, on the "chromatic anniversary" of The Drone
Cycle 2000
dreamSTATE begin the Cycle again, with new special guests performing
on a wide
variety of instruments, as they traverse the scale back downward:
January in C, February in B... to bring the Drone home!
As
in 2000, sometimes the Drone note will only be implied as dreamSTATE
and their guests explore new soundspace together - but it will always
remain their foundation and home for each concert. In 2012 you can bet
they will also be exploring drone-based grooves during the journeys.
In
2000 there was visuals for only one concert of the series.
In 2012 dreamSTATE are very, very happy to have
analogue visual greats General
Chaos Visuals along for the trip.

THE DRONE CYCLE 2012 - DECEMBER (C#)

December
4th, 2012 (C#) with Beau
Lukes (Sorcerer) on didgeridoo and percussion
plus sets by Darren
Copeland (performing John Cage's Four
using recordings from The Drone Cycle 2012)
and Sylken
with Michael Holcer and Beau Lukes
For
the final concert in the Drone Cycle 2012, dreamSTATE are honoured
that
sound artist Darren Copeland will open the evening (at 8:15) by performing
a special version of John Cage's Four.6 where Max/MSP is automated
to make
the creative choices in interpreting Cage's four-part score. All sounds designated
for each performer in Four.6 have been edited by Darren from the archival
recordings
of dreamSTATE's previous 11 Drone Cycle 2012 performances plus a 12th sound
derived from a mystery source. Darren performs the piece as part of worldwide
celebrations for the 100th anniversary of John Cage's birth. Thank-you Darren!
At 9:00pm
dreamSTATE will take the stage to complete the Drone Cycle
with special guest Beau Lukes (aka Sorcerer). Beau has played hand percussion
for over 20 years, and the Didgeridoo for 15 years. He works primarily in
electronic
landscapes favouring Ambient with a tribal edge (as well as Electronica, Dance
& Industrial)
and his latest works can be heard in his collective endeavour The Eclipse
Project.
Beau will also
perform in the 3rd set with his newest project S E V A
with Eric Hopper (Sylken) & Michael Holcer to conclude the night
with some fresh musical magic.
dreamSTATE
have been blessed in 2012 with the creative
contributions of General Chaos Visuals throughout the

O'Brien
(Anomalous Disturbances) on guitar plus sets by Anomalous Disturbances
and Wassonic
dreamSTATE's
special guest Terrence (Terry) O'Brien was one
of the first artists theyinvited to join them for the Drone Cycle 2012.
He has played with Jamie at the PiNG in years past as part of
their ambient trio SADU with Eric Hopper from Sylken, but this
will be the first time Terry has performed with both Jamie and Scott.
Terry is quite a gear aficionado and dreamSTATE look forward to his
latest sounds and approaches to guitar, guitar-synth, treatments
and live-looping skills.

THE DRONE CYCLE 2012 - OCTOBER (D#)

Tuesday
October 9th, 2012 ~ Way back in 2000 (in the time of the original
Drone Cycle)
we had our minds blown when Ben
Grossman played his hurdy
gurdy masterfully
through treatments and a looper at the PiNG for Planet of the Loops. We've
talked
occasionally through the years about playing together - and that time is now!
Another
thrill is to have violinist Hugh
Marsh along for the trip.
Like Ben, Hugh has played with practically every notable musician in Canada
(including our personal faves Mary Margaret O'Hara and Bruce Cockburn)
and brings a identifiable personal electricity to his instrument.
We're
looking forward to hearing the combination of dreamSTATE's electronics
woven with the sounds of instruments born before the Renaissance and played
by modern masters with thoroughly modern minds!
The
second set will feature Ben and Hugh playing freely together as they
"transport you to a beautiful world in which George Clinton and Arnold
Schoenberg's
love children can live in peace at last under a black metal sun."
Not to be missed!
General
Chaos Visuals will illuminate the night with their
venerable "post-Renaissance" analogue light paintings.

THE DRONE CYCLE 2012 - SEPTEMBER (E)

Tuesday
September 11th, 2012 ~ For the key of E an electric guitarist
was mandatory for us and we're very happy to have space guitarist Phil
Ogison
(The Devil In The Design, Amoeba Starfish) along for this trip, bending those
metal strings. We're also thrilled to have the true Master of Metal Alan
Bloor
(Pholde, Knurl) join us for this edition. We specifically invited him to play
a
fantastic instrument he designed - constructed from a VERY large saw blade
and metal strings which he strokes, scrapes and strikes with violin bows,
metal rods and bars. This show will be a very mercurial amalgam
of metal and electronics.

Tuesday
August 14th, 2012 ~ In the heart of summer, dreamSTATE's
August theme is COLD, as they perform a super-chilled Drone Cycle set
with the ice-blooded duo from Kalte
- Rik MacLean (Mara's Torment) and
Deane Hughes (Akumu). The key is F for Freezing!
Expect
glacial sheets of sound as they travel to the far north
to explore the ice fields and tundra with their trusty Kalte guides.
Also expect a special below-zero light presentation from General
Chaos Visuals and a deep, deep fog environment for this singular
edition of the Cycle.
In
the second set, Kalte has plotted a winding, dangerous course
to take you deeper into the arctic - all the way to the pole.

THE DRONE CYCLE 2012 - JULY (F#)

dreamSTATE

Hoare 2012.07.10 - photo by Lynn

Tuesday
July 10th ~ dreamSTATE are very pleased to perform for the first
time with
multi-talented wind player Rob
Hoare, visiting from Berlin, and with our old friend,
synthesist Steven Sauvé
(karmafarm, Sylken, quasiMODAL) who has performed with us
many times - notably in the first Drone Cycle in July 2000. Many people acclaimed
that show as their favourite of the Cycle and wished to be assured that it
was recorded,
but, alas, the tapes turned out to be blank empty space. It's clearly unsafe
to count on the recorder,
so grab a cold one and join us in the flesh for "F#nky Drones" night.
General Chaos
Visuals
will be in the house to delight the eyes with their old-school projections.
Rob
and Steven will also perform a second set as Geek Weekend - steeped in random
processes,
drenched in absurdity and dripping with irony. Perfect for a hot night in
July.

Tuesday
June 12th ~ For this edition of the Cycle, dreamSTATE with
be joined by
the three sound artists from Odradek:
Andy Yue - Master of the Korg MS-20 analog synth
and a rare musician who is truly in-control on his ribbon-controller, James
Bailey - Found-sound
artist extraordinaire, who we hope will be bringing his little plastic, mini-sax
MIDI controller,
Michelangelo Iaffaldano - Creator of many strange instruments and fluent
with so many
conventional ones that he surprised us by announcing that he'll be bringing
a laptop
for this show. Since Jamie will also be sqeezing out scapes and grooves from
his laptop,
Scott will just be playing the Pads this round... Kaoss Pads & iPads,
that is.
Odradek will also play a "solo" set.
dreamSTAdreamSTATE's
analog visual allies General
Chaos Visuals will be setting up their photonic weaponry
to either protect us from strange alien lifeforms or to open a portal for

THE DRONE CYCLE 2012 - MAY (G#)

dreamSTATE
with Byron Wong 2012.05.15 - photo by Bert
Bonkowski
Tuesday
May 15th ~ dreamSTATE will be weaving many threads together
for this special edition of the Drone Cycle. May is traditionally Deep Wireless
month at THE AMBiENT PiNG presenting "Radio In Ambience" with their
friends from New Adventures In Sound Art. In 2003 and 2004, Scott M2
had the pleasure of improvising with revered radio radical David Pritchard
and electronic producer Byron Kent Wong in David's first & last live
music performances - as he passed away in the year after. If you
have a moment, please read about some of David's
rich history.
dreamSTATE
invited Byron back to join them in a tribute to David
(a very significant inspiration to them all) as they collage electronics,
live and prepared radio, transformed samples of David's voice and some
never-released tracks Scott has been mining from old demo cassettes
and re-keying into this month's drone note of G#. Byron promises
he's "going to take a chance and use a few things that are at
best unstable, but have great connection to David". Here's a
fun
article on Byron and his awesome vintage gear collection.
Byron
will be playing a solo set after guesting with dreamSTATE.
Hector Centeno + Tetsuo Kogawa will be opening the night.
Liz
Janik (one of the last daytime DJs to program their own music
at CFNY - a station where David was the original program director)
will be in the house to introduce the dreamSTATE set and will be
bringing a new DVD of her "interdimensional photos" scored with
music by David, which will be played in the first intermission.
General
Chaos will provide their etherial visuals.

THE DRONE CYCLE 2012 - APRIL (A)

dreamSTATE

Pahwa
Tuesday
April 10th dreamSTATE will be joined by Harry Kessels of the
Dutch/Canadian multimedia project Wave
World for a set rooted in A-natural.
Harry
will be performing on Theremin, Voice and Synthesizer and
Scott M2 will be adding a second iPad to his performance instruments.
We can predict that this will be a very spacey show, deepened
by the contributions of General Chaos Visuals.
Following
a short break, Harry dons his Kgevenisandi persona to
perform seven Wave World pieces with sonic assistance from Toronto
electronic musicians Michael Holcer + Eric Hopper (Sylken). The set will
be accompanied by a visual suite by Wave World's Rolf van Slooten,

May 12th - June 6th, 2010 ~ Rain of Fire is a new multimedia collaboration
between dreamSTATE's Scott
M2
and poet/fiberartist Lynn Harrigan that combines embroidery, poetry and ambient
video painting to address the vulnerability
of so many during these times of rapid economic change. Created as part of
their developing Oblique Poetries series,
the piece reflects the emotions of people trapped by the economic collapse
of recent times and the false promises
of the global new world order. Left exposed and unprotected, there is no solace
in the gospels of greed.

M2, can be experienced at the
Roadside Attractions
gallery - 911 Davenport Road, Toronto.
A
vintage television sits on an old wooden table. Rabbit-ear antennae extended,
the signal hopefully enhanced by crumpled foil on the tip of one damaged ear.
The
forecast for the future is blue screens and blackness.
Television snow, a constant since childhood,
disappears with analog television sets as technology evolves.
A contemplation of transience and an appreciation of simple beauty,
Cloud Painting #13 pays homage to the time of snow.

July
6th through 15th, 2006 ~ Scott M2 performed dreamSTATE soundscapes
to accompany
MOON SEA CROSSING - The Play at The
Toronto Fringe Festival. Produced by Fertile
Ground Productions,
the play garnered a 5-star review from writer Kellie Maltese in eye
weekly magazine:
"This
gathering of mythology, music and meta-fiction produces a poetic palimpsest
of Irish beliefs
and one immigrant woman's struggle to find a balance among them. In an audience-directed
monologue,
"MOON SEA CROSSING" is accentuated by music and lighting that serve
to mirror both the
character's emotional and physical battle based on the prejudices that bind
her. With language that
flows like the sea that has stolen her away from her homeland, the audience
can't help but follow her along."

28th, 2006 - After a successful musical meeting of the minds on February
14th,
dreamSTATE took things farther with poet Lynn
Harrigan and guitarist/synthesist Phil
Ogison
(aka The Devil In The Design). Opening the set, accompanied by ambience
from dreamSTATE and Phil,
Lynn read the latest pieces from her work-in-progress Oblique Poetries,
then dreamSTATE launched into Berlin-inspired Moog sequencing
on their new virtual-synth stacks
with soaring guitar work from Phil, bridged by abstract ambient interludes.
In
the first set "outside" artist Menno
Krant painted directly on 5 CD covers
and on 3 human models while Phil
Ogison improvised 5 new musical works.
This is stage one of their "Vessel" series which will culminate
in a gallery showing of 25 paintings and their associated soundart.

dreamSTATE
perform at the opening of the Bread & Water multimedia installation
in the
Huron Historic Gaol, on August 27th 2004, with poet Lynn Harrigan and cellist
Laura Jean McCann.
~
August 28th to October 24th 2004 - New dreamSTATE ambient soundscapes
were featured
at the Bread & Water multimedia installation in the Huron Historic
Gaol in Goderich, Ontario.
Based on Moon Sea Crossing, a collection of poems by Lynn
Harrigan, this collaborative installation
related the true story of Aina, an Irish woman who immigrated to Canada with
her husband
and children in 1846. Aina suffered a breakdown shortly after her arrival in Huron
County and was
incarcerated at the Gaol, as there were no mental institutions at that time and
place. Poems, music,
paintings and photographs throughout the Gaol explored a variety of themes,
including mental illness,
displacement, hunger, grief and Irish folklore.
For
this installation, dreamSTATE created seven new soundscapes to support
the emotions of Harrigan's poetry. Installed in various spaces within the
Historic Goal,
the soundscapes represented the stages of Aina's journey to Canada, to Stanley
Township and
eventually within the Gaol's walls. The
music from this installation is now available on the PASSAGE
CD.

mutating the amazing samples they had access to from the MusicWorks
magazine CD archive for a
live performance at their fundraising event last month. Not only do Scott and

clearance from MusicWorks
to use these samples again, but during the concert
they will be giving away 3 free subscriptions to the magazine, which includes
a CD of cutting-edge experimental music with each issue!
dreamSTATE
